Expensive Business Training Needs to be Good, but Good Training Needn’t be Expensive

A new type of training seminar offers the high quality companies are used to but at a truly affordable price. Inspirational Seminars Ltd is using the medium of seminars, which they have branded ‘Quick & Dirty!’ Instead of asking companies to book their staff on a 2 or 3 day programme, they have encapsulated the ‘real meat’ of these programmes in seminars just 3 hours long.

Training staff and management in the ‘Soft-Skills’ is seen as an investment in people however when the economic outlook is bleak, what was previously thought of as an investment becomes seen as a cost. But how can a company be fit to weather the storm if for example they stop motivating their sales people and line managers with good training? Companies shouldn’t be as much concerned about the economic outlook, as much as they should be on the look-out for good training that will continue to build their business.

Inspirational Seminars is a training company that is offering companies a new way to continue development of their staff but at a very affordable price. The ‘Quick & Dirty!’ concept allows organisations to continue with the essence of vital training whist allowing them breathing space to recover. When the budget allows, more in depth face to face training can take place using the same world class trainers and course writers to maintain continuity.

In recent years, the training industry has seen quite a lot of seminars that are really only vehicles to sell companies and individuals longer and more expensive courses; they contain very little in the form of usable information. The ‘Quick & Dirty!’ seminars offer people a stream of ideas during the 3 hours that people can go away and use immediately. These seminars will be rolled out over the UK and Europe after a series of pilot schemes starting in Oxfordshire.

John Burke, a director of Inspirational Seminars Ltd says; ‘the benefits to companies who take advantage of this type of training is that they get high quality training with low investment, they do not lose people from the office for more than half a day and there are no hotel costs involved. But perhaps one of the most important benefits is that both the material and delivery are of the highest quality because the seminars are run by very experienced, world-class trainers of international acclaim. Another benefit that companies find is that this type of training fills a gap until they are in a situation whereby they can undertake more in-depth training’.

He continues, ‘since people are the ‘life-blood’ of any company it is of course important for companies to continue the learning and development of people within the organisation. Most HR Departments are inundated with information from training companies and so the process of making decisions as to which company to use can be very much like a minefield these days. What companies should bear in mind is this: although expensive training needs to be good, good training needn’t be expensive’.

Tuesdays "Brown Bag" Seminar

On the 16th January I sat in on ProDiverse's stimulating "Brown Bag" seminar in a gridlocked Finchley Training centre. Incidentally the name brown bag is derived from the US meaning a casual and informal meeting with sandwiches [in the Brown Bag] as opposed to a business lunch!

Anyway back to the Seminar which was ably conducted by Nick Hinchliffe.

The purpose was to challenge mind sets and conditioned responses. Indeed Nick brought up the subject of Pavlov's Dog, about conditioned response.

The main target was to challenge the preconceived ideas that we all fall into over the years. Especially in the work place and company "politics". The Seminar was there to both allow the recipient to see through the "politics" and identify the "players" and their roles. It also explored our fears [often irrational] that have been "cultivated by others in the work place.

Well worth attending just to strip away our self consciousness and get to the route of problems and to identify your own strengths to capitalise on them.

Lifelong Learning and Mentoring

For all those who feel that when they graduate they have achieved their goal, need to consider the experiences of some of the most successful players in most markets. I mean those who have pushed forward and really made major success, usually measured in £millions or becoming pre-eminent in their field.

It's the constant need to acquire new knowledge, skills and experiences that mark them apart. In addition many high flyers now have a mentor, a person or several who can pose them a question, set them a task or just challenge their ideas.

They will also attend seminars, go to workshops, read books, listen to tapes or CD's, watch training DVD's and keep accumulating knowledge. All markets and professions are constantly evolving, and you too need to keep on this evolution. As Business, careers, life and society become ever more complex, we fall behind. So lifelong learning is the standard, if you wish to succeed beyond the norm then you will have to dedicate yourself to many training programmes and seminars.

Learning is not a chore; it can be your route to success, a new career, promotion or setting up your own business. As predicted in the late 1950's by the Canadian Economist J K Galbraith (1958 the "Affluent Society", and 1967 the "New Industrial State"), the modern "worker" or professional will need to retrain many times during their career. This prediction is now so clear, and worsened by the need to be retrained very much more frequently.

Therefore constant training is a pre-requisite for the modern employee, business owners, and entrepreneurs alike.

Swimming with Sharks

I have come across more and more people who are asking such questions as: How do I recognise office politics? and What do I need to do to both survive it and use it to my advantage? Too many are commenting that the current education system and degrees are not giving young people the tools by which to recognise, survive and advance within the shark infested waters of the corporate world.

Today's market place for both the the corporate world and the entrepreneur is getting more and more demanding in terms of understanding the politics of the open market place itself and within the office environment. For the individual it is getting even harder. Today you need to develop a 'Survival Guide' on corporate and office politics.

Those who want to succeed both today and triumph tomorrow are wanting more information on: How do I recognise Shark Infested Waters? What are the characteristics? What types of sharks are there? and What threats do they pose to me? People are seeking out advice on: Do I become an office/corporate shark?

Do I swim with the sharks? Do I swim in the same sea as them or Do I move to a different ocean? It appears that to be a success in both the corporate world and as an entrepreneur you need more than just excellent business skills. You need to know how to Swim with Sharks.

Taking Responsibility for Personal Development

Women and men are taking responsibility for their personal and professional development. Instead of leaving it up to their employer or chance more and more men and women are being more and more pro-active.

They are setting the agenda for where they want to be in the future, their goals and aspirations. To achieve and maximise potential people are identifying the learning, development and training needed to move them forward.

Companies are striving to achieve and maintain Investors in People, ISO etc. What people don't realise is that Investors in People says that the development and training given to staff is 'only that required to meet the needs of the organisation'. You can be developed, you will receive training but it is for the company, their profit - Not For You.

How many of you have been with the same company for a while? Had training! Never progressed further? Why? Because it is for them and not for you.

People are beginning to think 'outside the box'. What do you need to do to invest in yourself to move you forward to achieving your potential, whether that be promotion, personal and professional development, creating a business, technical, people, management and leadership skills.

Rather than leaving it up to others more and more people are buying personal development, knowledge, skills and experience that will add value to them. They are seeing themselves as their own marketable product. They have value. They are realising that they need to invest in and market the product. Themselves. If done properly they reap the rewards, its their profit. Why give it away.
